Refurbished vs New: What’s the Difference?
When comparing refurbished and new mattresses, the main difference comes down to price, sustainability, and how the product is prepared before it reaches you.
‍
A new mattress is factory-fresh and has never been used. It offers the latest materials and comes straight from production, typically at a higher price point.
A refurbished mattress, on the other hand, has been previously returned, often during a trial period, but is then professionally cleaned, inspected, and restored to meet strict quality standards.
‍
Any item that doesn’t pass these checks is rejected, ensuring only high-quality mattresses are resold. In terms of comfort and performance, a well-refurbished mattress can feel just like a brand-new model, but at a significantly lower cost. The added benefit is sustainability: choosing refurbished helps reduce waste and extends the life of premium materials.

FAQs

Is a refurbished mattress covered by Emma's Service Guarantee?
Refurbished does not mean reduced coverage. Every refurbished Emma mattress is backed by the same trial period, guarantee, and free delivery as the original range, reflecting the same standard of comfort and quality.
What trial and guarantee apply to a refurbished mattress?
Refurbished mattresses include a 200-night home trial and a 10-year guarantee, identical to new units. Should a manufacturing defect arise within this period, Emma provides a replacement refurbished mattress.
How are the mattresses refurbished?
Each returned mattress is tracked and inspected by trained technicians. Units that pass inspection undergo deep cleaning through chemical disinfection and UV-C treatment, followed by testing against British cleanliness standards. Once approved, the mattress receives a new cover and is hygienically sealed, rolled, and boxed for dispatch.
How is the mattress packaged?
Mattresses are rolled, vacuum-sealed, and boxed, consistent with new-product packaging standards.
Will the mattress arrive inflated?
No. The mattress is shipped vacuum-sealed within a box and requires 2–6 hours to fully expand after unpacking.
Does the trial and guarantee apply to refurbished products purchased online?
Yes. Refurbished mattresses purchased through the website include the same 200-night trial, 10-year guarantee, and free delivery as new mattresses. Any manufacturing defect identified within the trial period entitles the customer to free collection and a replacement refurbished mattress.
What care is required for a refurbished mattress?
Care requirements are identical to those for new mattresses. The cover is removable and machine washable. Customers are advised to rotate the mattress monthly for the first three months, then every three months thereafter.
Are refurbished mattresses available in all sizes?
Availability is limited by stock levels, and not all sizes can be guaranteed at all times.
